Developing Mental Toughness Mentality

Your mind set when starting a business is arguably one of the most important things. I have said multiple of times on the podcast, and in person, that challenges will present themselves. That’s why building the right mindset is so important! Developing mental toughness as an entrepreneur is so important!

Challenges will come up daily, weekly, monthly and even hourly.

Adversity will continue to come your way, but it’s important for you to understand why you do what do. Understanding what gives you your identity.

The reason I say this is because there will come a time when you feel like giving up and quitting. Whether its starting your own business, trying to lose weight, trying to make more money, there will come times of challenges.

However, at the end of the day you still have a choice. You can accept the challenges for what they are and give up, or you can step up.

You can push yourself forward, and continuously strive to become better. These are the moments that create your identity and what we choose to believe for ourselves.

When you’re first starting and executing on goals, your mindset is one of the most important and crucial elements to becoming successful.

In a recent podcast I got the opportunity to sit down with Ryan Laniuk from RDL performance to focus on the mindset of starting a business.

RDL Performance

Ryan Laniuk is the owner of a company called RDL performance and has a coaching program called ‘Coach em to keep em’.

Ryan Laniuk works alongside entrepreneurs and business owners to help get the most out of themselves but also their teams. Ryan works alongside the clients to put a coaching process in place to keep them remain motivated. Ryan works alongside any type of entrepreneur or any individual who wants to strive for success.

Whether you’re an entrepreneur, athlete, sales representative Ryan shows you how you can become better, but also teaching other people to help others performance.

Rich Experiences

Ryan has a rich history working alongside some well established people in industry. Ryan got the opportunity to work alongside Steve Siebold who is the author of “177 Mental Toughness Secrets of the World Class: The Thought Processes, Habits and Philosophies of the Great ones.”

“We did mental toughness training for over 3500 financial service providers over the last couple of years. Where we were speaking to groups of anywhere from 500 to 1000 people.”

Working alongside Steve, Ryan got the opportunity to travel across North America from one day being in New York staying in a hotel room overlooking the Statue of Liberty to the very next day overlooking the lakes in Kelowna.

With such a cool and unique experience I had to ask Ryan:

What did you learn working along Steve Siebold?

“What I really learned working with Steve is this concept of mental toughness. It’s one of these buzz words,  Mental toughness, grit, [determination], there’s so many ways of saying the same thing. Mental toughness really isn’t that hard to develop. It’s just the matter of understanding that its about controlling your thoughts. Once you can recognize that you have the ability to control your thoughts, it’s really not that difficult to do. It’s just taking the years and years of conditioning from, right from birth where we tell people not to think this way, and not to do things. To get them to recognize yeah, you do have control over your thoughts and how you react to situations….. Everything that you do is conditioned in some way, shape or form. Once you recognize that, you can start making some pretty significant changes and become ‘mentally tough’

How to set proper goals

Back in January I made a podcast regarding goal setting. I recorded that podcast at the beginning of the year, talking about making New Year’s Resolutions. If you want to listen to that podcast you can do so HERE.

Setting goals is extremely important, as I continue to set new goals every single month. Once I set goals, I want to make sure I am following through on them, and finally checking in on them. For example, if you set monthly goals, check every week if you are on track to accomplishing those goals. What behaviour needs to change for you to stay on track for your goals.

Setting goals is one unique thing that every successful person I have came across does.

Ryan Laniuk is no different, but has a rather unique different way of setting goals.

Ryan’s Way of Establishing Goals 

What Ryan recommends his clients is to create that ultimate vision. What do you want to accomplish and what does that look like?

For example: I want to make X amount of dollars per year. I want my business to be growing at X rate.

What Ryan recommends is to discover that ultimate vision, and then work backwards.  Create that vision, create goals that are going to get you to your vision, and then what do have to do to get there. Finally, monitoring your progress along the way.  


Just like when your going on a diet or a workout plan. You track everything. You track your body fat percentage, your heart rate, duration of time you ran for, how long did you run for etc.

Alot of times people will only track one thing. They will only track how much weight they have lost. But there is a reason, when you taking personal training, the trainer will measure everything. It’s because there are going to come times, where you will become frustrated and want to give up.

Even though you might not be making results in one area, does not mean you are not making progress.

That’s why it is extremely important to track your progress. TRACKING EVERYTHING!

Three Tips When Starting a Business

Every guest that comes onto the podcast, I like to ask the question. “If you were starting a business, what are three tips that you would give?”

When asked this question Ryan said.

  1. “Develop an unshakeable belief that you will succeed”
  2. “Be patient, results take longer than we want to show up”
  3. “Invest in coaching and mentorship. Have someone there to push you when you need it”


Mindset Tools and Techniques

Ryan and I in the podcast cover many different tools that you can use to develop the right mindset when starting a business.

These tools are not very hard to use, they can even be as simple as “thinking about what your thinking”. Discover what you are thinking about and ask the question, “Why”.

Discovering why, you think the way you do, and the stories behind is something that will help you separate yourself.  When you discover your way of thinking and why you decide to think the way you do, that’s incredibly powerful tool.

When you discover that you can use this, you will see results in your life as long as you continue to execute on them.

It’s been proven that having these right tools and techniques can yield you the results you desire. Even through the academic articles and studies that have been conducted that Ryan reads, you will discover the importance of building the right mindset when starting a business.
